Croatian Ship Captain Denied Release from Greek Prison
January 28th, 2008
Zagreb, January 28 (CP) — The Dubrovnik-based ship captain Kristo Laptalo and his colleagues are to remain in custody in a Greek jail following their request for release being rejected, despite guarantees given by Croatian president Stjepan Mesic, himself.
Captain Laptalo and his crew were jailed in the infamous Greek Koridalos prison in July of 2007, when some 51 kilos of cocaine were found on the ship he was commanding.
No charges have been filed against any of the jailed men so far and at the same time they are not being set free.
Laptalo has been professing his innocence since day one saying that neither he nor the crew were in any contact with the freight.
