Wife and Brother of Former Croatian Foreign Minister Suspected of Embezzlement

agreb, February 5 (CP) – The wife and brother of Croatia’s former Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul are being investigated for embezzlement amounting to several million kuna, reports the Vecernji List daily.

The two have been suspected of making negligent business deals and misuse of position and authority regarding the business dealings of the now defunct Sloboda textiles plant from Samobor.

The plant went bankrupt in 1991, but production had been restarted later with a cut number of staff. The plant was later bought by a businessman who had Tatjana Zuzul, the wife of Miomir Zuzul, as its co-owner. Boris Zuzul, the brother of Miomir had been made its director.

In the process, Tatjana’s business partner had made moves that had further brought the plant down and it eventually went bankrupt once again in 2000.

Boris Zuzul is expecting to give his account of the plant’s business dealings on Wednesday. Tatjana Zuzul was also expected to answer questions about the business dealings of the plant on Wednesday, but she had allegedly not received the subpoena.

Once the hearing is completed, the gathered facts will be forwarded to the prosecution to assess whether charges should be filed.

Former Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul had resigned from his post in January 2005 amid allegations of corruption, which he denied. He explained his resignation as his wish not to pose a burden to ruling Croatian Democratic Union and its leader and PM Ivo Sanader.
