Mesic: The ZERP Issue Has Been Blown out of Proportion
February 7th, 2008
Zagreb, February 7 (CP) — President Stjepan Mesic has said he believed the Protected Ecology and Fisheries Belt (ZERP) in the Adriatic issue was blown out of proportion, but is an open issue which needs to be solved.
He said that the real problem was the fact that Slovenia was linking the issue of the maritime border with the resolving of the section of the land border, which is now down to an international body to rule upon.
Mesic said that the incident of the burning Turkish ship in the area where the Croatian territorial sea overlaps with ZERP serves as proof that that the Adriatic needs to be monitored. He stressed that Croatia was a responsible country, which wants to see the ecology aspect including over fishing being monitored.
