President Mesic Denies Croatia Would Recognize Kosovo on Thursday, as Media Reported Earlier

Zagreb, February 18 (CP) – Croatian president Stjepan Mesic has said that Croatia would not recognize Kosovo’s independence, despite such claims by the media quoting unofficial government sources.

Mesic said that he did not expect the topic to make it onto the government’s session agenda on Thursday, but confirmed that he had received a message from Serbian president Boris Tadic via Serbian Ambassador to Croatia Boris Tadic.

Mesic added that Croatia would be watching the moves by EU countries, but will also make a point of making its view known regarding the issue of Kosovo recognition.

Mesic stressed that Croatia wanted to maintain good relations with its neighbours in the region.

Kosovo has declared its independence on Sunday, February 17 and has so far had U.S. president G.W. Bush recognize its independence by saying that the Kosovars were now independent. It’s still to be seen in what sequence the EU countries will start recognizing the latest European state.
