The Sledgehammer Operation Aimed at Arresting Paedophiles in Croatia Currently Results in just a Single Arrest
Zagreb, March 1 (AP) – The police commissioner Marijan Benko has announced that the operation aimed at arresting paedophiles in Croatia has resulted in one person ending up in custody.
Benko said that in the operation some 180 flats and businesses were searched, some 300 computers, 16,000 CDs and DVDs, 350 videocassettes and numerous photographs were confiscated.
So far, the computers and objects belonging to 36 people have been sifted through and in 21 cases paedophile content was detected and charges filed against them, while in six cases breach of legislation on misuse of intellectual property was established and they were also charged.
The police had arrested eight suspects, but only one had been detained, while others have been freed pending court procedure.
The operation coded Sledgehammer was conducted in 19 counties and as the materials are sifted through charges will be brought against those found to have broken the law.
