Croatian Navy Purchases Two Second-hand Vessels for €6 Million
Zagreb, March 24 (CP) – The Croatian navy has spent €6 on the purchase of two Finnish corvettes built in the 1980’s.
The purchase was made as part of the ‘offset’ procurement program of 126 armoured vehicles also from Finland.
The vessels are to be handed over to Croatia in mid-July and already several Croatian navy officers have been dispatched to Finland for training.
The ships will be used for patrolling the coast and the sea, the purchase upgrading the firepower of the Croatian maritime forces by as much as 50 percent.
The ships belonging to the Helsinki class carry a 57-milimetre cannon, two anti-air cannons of 23 millimetres, as well as back platforms carrying eight RBS-15 long-range anti-vessel rockets.
The two corvettes will secure that Croatia is able to monitor what is happening underwater as well, as the Finnish vessels have strong anti-submarine sonar.
