Foreigners in Croatia under Scrutiny Prior to Bush Visit
Zagreb, March 24 (CP) – The police have stepped up their checks of foreigners that are currently in Croatia and explaining this intense scrutiny by the fact that US president George W. Bush was coming for a visit in less than two weeks.
The police have been combing through all the hotels, bed and breakfasts, but also flats occupied by foreigners.
Allegedly the police have been storming private hotels on Zagreb’s outskirts and seeking foreigners occupying them, although mostly there had been none.
The explanation given to the owners by the police has been that they were only doing their job which included the checking of every foreigner currently in Croatia or any that is to arrived in Croatia until Bush’s visit.
The police spokesperson Krunoslav Borovec confirmed checks were being carried out, but rejected this was happening over the visit by the US president, but rather said it was a regular procedure.
Borovec expressed surprise over foreigners complaining of such checks which were regular and added they would be conducted in the future.
