Father of ICTY Indictee Gen. Ante Gotovina Dead at 76

Zagreb, May 22 (CP) – The father of ICTY indictee currently on trial for war crimes committed during operation Storm, Ante Gotovina, Milan Gotovina has died after suffering a massive heart attack at the age of 76.

Gotovina’s father has been suffering from heart disease for a while and has already suffered a heart attack prior to the one that killed him.

It is not yet clear whether The Hague Tribunal will be allowing Gotovina compassion leave in order to attend his father’s funeral.

The ICTY procedure entails the person detained to submit a written request to be let out temporarily and guarantees need to be given the person will return to jail after an agreed period.

Both the prosecution and the judges’ council need to decide on whether to grant temporary leave.
