SDSS To Remain Part of Croatian Government Despite Threats To Walk out

Zagreb, March 26 (CP) – The Independent Democratic Serb Party (SDSS) has at an emergency session of its main body has after an hour and a half of debate decided to remain in the government.

It has been decided that Slobodan Uzelac is to remain in the government, but certain conditions are to be put to the government for this to happen.

The SDSS threatened to walk out of the coalition government following Croatia’s recognition of Kosovo a week ago.

Croatian Soccer Squad To Play Scotland Tonight

Zagreb, March 26 (CP) — The Croatian national football team is in Glasgow today preparing for tonight’s friendly match against Scotland. Croatia has two more friendlies ahead of the 2008 European Championships, those matches will be against Moldova and Hungary in May.

Tonight’s match kicks off at 9 PM at Hampden Park.

Croatian Actor Boris Dvornik Laid To Rest

Zagreb, March 26 (CP) — Friends, colleagues, and fans will pay their last respects to Croatian actor Boris Dvornik today at a ceremony to be held at the Croatian National Theatre in Split at 1pm. Dvornik passed away in Split last Sunday at the age of 69. Funeral services will be at the Lovrinac cemetery in Split starting at 3:30pm, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader is expected to attend.

Dvornik was one of ex-Yugoslavia’s best known and loved actors who shot more than 40 feature films and had numerous roles in series and in theatre.

Six Former Military Police Members Arrested for War Crimes in the Pakrac Area

Zagreb, March 25 (CP) – Six former members of the National Guard military police 76 battalion have been charged for committing war crimes in the killing of 16 Serb civilians near Pakrac in 1991.

A month ago Damir Kufner and Davor Simic, both commanders of the military police platoon responsible for the killing had been arrested, but the investigation had continued resulting in the arrests prior to Easter of Zeljko Tutic, Tomislav Poletto and Ante Ivezic and finally Pavle Vancas, today.

The materials used to indict the six have been handed to the State Attorney’s Office by the International War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague (ICTY) in the case led against Tomislav Mercep who had never been indicted by the ICTY.

Members of the platoon have been indicted for breaking into homes of Serbs in the Pakrac area, taking them to the gathering centre in the village of Ribnjak, torturing them and then liquidating them.

The bodies were thrown into a fishpond and would appear on the surface this witness by fishpond keepers.

Huge Boulder Hits Home in Samobor near Zagreb Destroying the Living Room; No Injuries Reported

Zagreb, March 25 (CP) – A huge boulder of some 180 centimetres in diameter dislodged from a larger stone mass in the picturesque town of Samobor close to Zagreb, hitting a home and making its way into the living room in the early hours of Tuesday.

The large stone had broken off a nearby cliff and after making it into the house destroyed the table and chairs in the living room.

No one was injured in the accident, as all the occupants were sleeping at the time.

The police were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Osijek Leadership Elected after a Seven-month Vacuum

Following seven months of political squabbles the Osijek authorities’ crisis has finally ended with Croatian Pary of Rights (HSP),  The Social Democratic Party (SDP), The Croatian Peoples’ Party( HNS) and the Pensioners’ Party( HSU) coming to the helm of the city.

The councillors of the said parties have 14 out of the 25 seats in the city council, securing the necessary majority to form the new city authorities.

Gordan Matkovic of HSP is to become the new Osijek mayor, while HSP leader Anto Djapic is to become the city council president.

Public Offer of Suncani Hvar Shares as of Start of June

Zagreb, March 25 (CP) — Orco Property Group from Luxembourg is to put out a public tender for the purchase of Suncani Hvar tourism company shares.

The Orco regional director Dragutin Lazukic has said that the extra finances will be used to fund new projects like the Obonjan Rivijera.

Croatian Privatisation Fund Announces It would Put out Tenders for Imota and Adriachem

Zagreb, March 25 (CP) — The Croatian Privatisation Fund (HFP) has put out public tenders for the sale of 98.79 percent of Imota wine and grapes producer from Imotski and 81.67 percent of plastics producer Adriachem from Kastel Sucurac.

The tenders have been put out under special conditions with the starting price standing at one kuna.

The Imota shares sale tender is open until April 14 and that for Adriachem until April 22.

Mount Biokovo Overlooking the Coastal Resort of Makarska Measures 40 Centimetres of Snow

Zagreb, March 25 (CP) — The Makarska riviera has among other Croatian regions been hit by inclement weather.

The coastal resort of Makarska known for its mild weather has measured six degrees on Tuesday afternoon, while on Biokovo the temperature has dropped to minus eight with 40 centimetres of snow.
 

Dubrovnik Battered by Twisters on Monday Afternoon

Zagreb, March 25 (CP) – The coastal town of Dubrovnik was battered by bad weather on Monday with mini-tornados hitting the area accompanied by wind and hale.
The storm witnessed by the residents of the region was said to had also produced lots of hale and at least 12 twisters.
The locals have said that if this were a movie it would have seemed to be stretching reality to the limits, as they could not believe what they saw.
Allegedly, the inclement weather in the region is said to be brought on by the Cicero cyclone responsible for the recent strange weather including a white Easter in Croatia.
