Zagreb, March 25 (CP) — The Croatian Chamber of Commerce and the Ministry of Agriculture are organizing a meeting to discuss the latest proposal of how to regulate food labels and advertising.
Regulations that are currently in use were adopted in 2004 and had generally harmonized Croatian regulations with those of the European Union.
However, the EU has changed its regulations and Croatia is required to do the same.

Zagreb, March 25 (CP) – A car thief from the town of Karlovac was arrested not far from Rijeka suspected of stealing five cars, but his arrest did not go smoothly.
After being cornered near the Novi Vinodolski resort by the Rijeka police, the 39-year-old suspect attempted to run over a policeman and then fled to the woods where he was hiding throughout the night.
However, during the run he suffered a broken leg, so due to insufferable pain he phoned some friends to come to his rescue, the whole group then falling into a police trap.
A change of career seems like a good option.

Zagreb, March 24 (CP) – Croatian swimmer Duje Draganja captured the silver in the 50 meter freestyle race at the European Swimming Championship in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Sunday.
The Croatian relay team Gordan Kozulj, Vanja Rogulj, Mario Todorovic and Duje Draganja also managed to capture a silver medal, while the Russian team came first and the Swedes third.
Another Croatian swimmer Sanja Jovanovic also captured a medal on Saturday in the 50 meter backstroke coming in third.

Zagreb, March 24 (CP) – The Islamic community in Croatia held is 3rd convention on Saturday at the Zagreb Islamic centre.
Those gathered discussed a report on the work of the Community during 2007 submitted by the Islamic leader in Croatia Sevko Omerbasic. The relations with the state bodies have been described as good and in line with an agreement signed with the government.
The negative demographic trend was emphasized, as well as a lack of grave land plots, a problem which needs to be urgently solved.
The financial report for 2007 and plans for 2008 were adopted.

Zagreb, March 24 (CP) – The police have stepped up their checks of foreigners that are currently in Croatia and explaining this intense scrutiny by the fact that US president George W. Bush was coming for a visit in less than two weeks.
The police have been combing through all the hotels, bed and breakfasts, but also flats occupied by foreigners.
Allegedly the police have been storming private hotels on Zagreb’s outskirts and seeking foreigners occupying them, although mostly there had been none.
The explanation given to the owners by the police has been that they were only doing their job which included the checking of every foreigner currently in Croatia or any that is to arrived in Croatia until Bush’s visit.
The police spokesperson Krunoslav Borovec confirmed checks were being carried out, but rejected this was happening over the visit by the US president, but rather said it was a regular procedure.
Borovec expressed surprise over foreigners complaining of such checks which were regular and added they would be conducted in the future.

Zagreb, March 24 (CP) – Some 64,000 tonnes of low-sulphur coal has been shipped into the Ploce port for B-H Steel metalworks from Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The shipment matches a quarters of the monthly traffic at the Ploce port.
During 2007, the Ploce port moved some 4.2 tonnes of goods, reaching record goods transport from the 80’s of the last century.
The B-H Steel is expected to increase the Ploce port goods traffic by 1.8 million tonnes.
Some 150,000 tonnes of goods have passed through Ploce since the start of 2008 and a total of five million tonnes is expected by the end of the year.

Zagreb, March 24 (CP) – The Croatian navy has spent €6 on the purchase of two Finnish corvettes built in the 1980’s.
The purchase was made as part of the ‘offset’ procurement program of 126 armoured vehicles also from Finland.
The vessels are to be handed over to Croatia in mid-July and already several Croatian navy officers have been dispatched to Finland for training.
The ships will be used for patrolling the coast and the sea, the purchase upgrading the firepower of the Croatian maritime forces by as much as 50 percent.
The ships belonging to the Helsinki class carry a 57-milimetre cannon, two anti-air cannons of 23 millimetres, as well as back platforms carrying eight RBS-15 long-range anti-vessel rockets.
The two corvettes will secure that Croatia is able to monitor what is happening underwater as well, as the Finnish vessels have strong anti-submarine sonar.

Zagreb, March 24 (CP) — Croatian theatre and movie great Boris Dvornik died aged 69 in a Split hospital on Sunday following a stroke.
His long career included 40 feature films, numerous roles in TV dramas and series, as well as theatre roles.
Dvornik had suffered a stroke a few years ago.

Zagreb, March 23 (CP) – Croatian backstroke champion Sanja Jovanovic has managed to capture bronze in the 50-meter backstroke at the European Swimming Championships in Eindhoven in the Netherlands on Sunday.
Although Jovanovic was in the lead most of the race, she lost her rhythm at the very fishing letting Russian Anastasia Zueva capture the gold, followed by runner up Spaniard Nina Zhivanevskaya.
Speaking to reporters following the race, Jovanovic said she had made several mistakes towards the end of the race, but managed to retain third place and capture the bronze.

Zagreb, March 23 (CP) – Zagreb and Croatia have been picked as the hosts of the 2010 European Waterpolo Championships by the Ligue Europeenne de Natation (LEN) bureau meeting held in the Dutch town of Eindhoven.
The only other bid for the event was a joint candidature of Romanian Oradea and Hungarian Debrecen.
This makes Zagreb the second Croatian city to host the best European waterpolo teams, after this was done by Split back in 1981.
The next Championships will be held in the Spanish city of Malaga July 3 – 13, 2008.
